Chapter 03 · Contract Blueprint

Choosing the Right Recruiter

The recruiter you pick is the person negotiating on your behalf. Vet them like you'd vet a business partner - because that's what they are for the length of the contract.

When the recruiter goes silent

Sometimes you make first contact, feel positive about the job, and then hit silence. You can request a change of recruiter in the early phase if the first isn't available - do it tactfully, they might be a colleague or supervisor of your contact. Follow up with a phone call, leave a message, and find out if they're on leave or no longer with the company. They might be willing to work with you later.

If they remain elusive, find another way to stand out. Be creative early: offer to bring a peer to work with this recruiter. You'll get a higher offer bringing them morebusiness than by asking for more and offering nothing back.

Sometimes even after a follow-up, the recruiter stays elusive. That usually means they oversold the offer - the client wasn't willing to pay what the recruiter promised. Move on and note the name so you don't waste time on them next round.
